Representative Malinowski Champions the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act

Statement

Date: Sept. 23, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

This week, the House of Representatives unanimously passed the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act of 2020 to fight back against the rising threat of domestic terrorism in the United States. Representative Malinowski is an original cosponsor of the legislation.

The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act would authorize three dedicated offices, one each within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), to monitor, investigate, and prosecute cases of domestic terrorism. These offices would also be responsible for providing training and resources to assist state and local law enforcement in defending against threat of domestic terrorism. Additionally, the bill requires the offices to provide Congress with biannual reports assessing the state of domestic terrorism threats, with a specific focus on white supremacists.

"Violence motivated by hate is on the rise in America, and New Jersey has seen more than our share," said Representative Malinowski. "I'm proud the House could come together to pass this bipartisan legislation that makes it easier for the federal government to identify and prosecute cases of domestic terrorism, and provides for transparency throughout the process."

Since his first days in office, Representative Malinowski has been a leading voice in Congress in the fight against white supremacist violence and domestic extremism. At Representative Malinowski's request, the 2020 budget restored funding for DHS Programs to prevent domestic terrorism that the Trump Administration cut in 2017.
